Ayling Wimbledon

The king of Graycastle Kingdom and father of Gerald, Timothy, Garcia, Roland and Tilly. Ayling Wimbledon, known as Wimbledon III, comes across as an intelligent and capable ruler who takes the affairs of the kingdom seriously. Care for his family and trust in the Church’s order shape his view of power and of what is happening in the realm for a long time. After the death of his wife, he becomes more withdrawn and takes the loss hard. A monarch under whose reign witches continue to be branded as servants of the devil and persecuted according to Church doctrine. Support for the Church remains an important part of his rule, although it is precisely this reliance that later opens the way for interference in the affairs of the crown. Wimbledon III combines the qualities of a strong ruler, a caring father, and a man who realizes too late how dangerous those around him have become.

His fate is ultimately bound to a conspiracy of the Church. During the Day of Prayer, Ayling is seized and replaced by a doppelganger through whom the Church begins to influence later events in Graycastle. The real Wimbledon III is kept imprisoned for several months and eventually dies in captivity.
